Summer happenings - Wordless Wednesday with Linky

I've been busy the last 2 months and haven't posted much.  I recently wrote about getting my butt in gear and posting more often (among other things) but it seems I have a lot to catch up with.  So hear are some adventures we have gone on the last month.   Epic sandcastles, ancient ships, birds of prey and the fall fair have kept us busy the last few weeks.

After Sloan's birthday we went to our friend's cottage at Wasaga Beach.

Tall Ships of 1812 was in town.

The beginning of our epic sandcastle

regular sand buckets just won't do.  Recycling bins all the way!

Dig, dig, dig, all day long.

Our masterpiece and  most of the gang

complete with moat and drip castles.

and a guard turtle

by the time we brought Sloan down to see it after her nap, kids had destroyed it.

the turtle was still in tact.  Bad guard turtle, you let he kids destroy our castle.

For the first time since I was a kid I saw a

praying mantis.  It seems he likes our front porch
because I have seen him/her in the same spot a few times.

Went to the fall fair and saw a falconry demo

Bald Eagle with her hood on to keep her calm.

I got to hold her!

I have opinions on this "participation ribbon" trend, but I'll save it for another day.

beautiful quilts make me want to learn how to quilt!

At the fall fair, there was a lovely mini-market of local organic produce, honey, eggs and crop share programs.  Here are the websites of the wonderful farmers I met:

Terra Verde Homestead
(owned and operated by a family I know - took care of their kids for a little while)

Tin Roof Rusted Farm
(their website is under construction currently - this is their Facebook page)

Levendale Farms
(I bought a Lemon Cucumber from them - unique looking and delicious!)

Ontario Falconry Centre
(Sam is a professional Falconer and lives to entertain and teach children about his birds - he does birthday parties too!)

Wellington County Safety Initiative
(Just found about this at the fair.  Important and great initiative!)

Kids, pets and hot cars - Wordy Wednesday with linky

There have been quite a few stories in the news of children and pets being left in hot cars (some resulting in death).  Some people do this on purpose thinking "I'll just be a minute and the windows are cracked," (usually with pets) but majority of the time, when a child is involved, it is an accident.

This video is an eye-opening visual to how it can happen.  It is very rarely neglectful parents that leave their children in the car.  It can be something as simple as a change in routine or sleep deprivation that can cause our brains to go into autopilot.

If you are afraid of accidentally leaving your child in the car, you can leave a visual trigger for yourself in the front seat (teddy bear, diaper bag, etc.) or put your purse or cellphone in the back seat with your child so you have more than one visual trigger for your brain.  For more information you can go to http://www.kidsandcars.org/

Good parents make mistakes, don't be too quick to judge a person as "neglectful".

Maternity photos ~ Wordless Wednesday with Linky

My dear friend Steph Person of Steph Person Photography (she will have a website soon) finally got my maternity pictures back.  I have been patiently waiting for almost a year.  I didn't rush her because, well, I don't have to pay for awesome photos so her paid jobs she's getting are obviously priority and I told her that.  I am thrilled with how they turned out and am happy I can share them!  This is when I was about 34-35 weeks along.

I love that man.

It's hard to play hide and seek when you're pregnant.

He's expecting too! lol
